SIDE HUSTLES & EXTRA INCOME

SIDE HUSTLES

A side hustle is simply something that earns money alongside your main income. The best choice is rarely the most popular one, but the one that fits the time and energy you genuinely have left.

WHAT TO CHECK

  • How many hours per week you realistically have, including in a bad week.
  • Which skills you already have from work, study or hobbies.
  • Start-up costs. Something that demands a lot up front is a risk, not an opportunity.
  • How quickly you can earn the first euro, because early confirmation keeps you going.
  • Whether the work gives you energy or drains it on top of your job.
  • What you need to agree with your employer if your contract limits outside work.

TYPES OF SIDE HUSTLE

Almost every side hustle falls into one of these groups. They differ mainly in how quickly you can start, how much time they take and how dependent you are on a platform.

  • Freelance services: you sell a skill by the hour or by the job, such as writing, design, editing, admin or translation.
  • Digital services for businesses: websites, social media management, email marketing, simple automation.
  • Selling skills offline: tutoring, odd jobs, moving help, photography, maintenance, sport or music.
  • Making content: video, writing or audio about something you actually know. Slow to start, but it compounds.
  • Selling things: clearing out and reselling what you already own is the lowest barrier there is.
  • Platform work: delivery, task platforms, research panels. Predictable but usually hard to scale.
  • AI assisted work: delivering existing services faster with AI as a tool, while you stay responsible for quality.

CHOOSE YOUR SIDE HUSTLE: FOUR QUESTIONS

Work through these four and write the answers down. What is left is usually clearer than any list on the internet.

  • Skills: what can you already do that is useful to someone else? Look at work, study and hobbies.
  • Time: how many hours a week do you have in an average week, not in your best week?
  • Start up cost: what does it take to begin? The closer to zero, the smaller the risk.
  • Risk: what do you lose if it does not work? Time you can carry, borrowed money you cannot.

SPOTTING SCAMS AND UNREALISTIC CLAIMS

The extra income space is full of people who earn from your hope rather than your results. These signals are a reason to stop.

  • You have to pay up front for access, a course or a starter pack before you can earn.
  • Specific amounts are promised in a short time, or results are called guaranteed.
  • You earn mainly by recruiting other people instead of delivering a product or service.
  • There is time pressure: only a few spots left, today only, decide quickly.
  • You are asked for your bank details or ID for something that does not need them.
  • It involves trading with borrowed money, or gambling and betting presented as income. That is not a side hustle.
  • Before you trust anyone: search the name, check independent sources and ask someone who earns nothing from your decision.

THE FIRST THIRTY DAYS

Pick one, give it a month, then measure honestly. Starting five things at once is the most common mistake.

  • Week 1: choose your service or product and describe in one sentence what you deliver and for whom.
  • Week 2: build the minimum someone can say yes to. A profile, a few examples and a price.
  • Week 3: approach ten people or businesses who might need this. Start with your own network.
  • Week 4: deliver, ask for feedback and decide whether to continue, adjust or stop.

FOUR STARTING ROUTES SIDE BY SIDE

No route is better. They suit different amounts of time, money and patience.

  2. 02Pick oneOne thing, thirty days. Starting several at once is the most common mistake.

Extra income can affect allowances, benefits or your tax return. Check that up front with the official body.

CHOOSING A PLATFORM TO START ON

If you want to offer services, a platform can help you find first jobs without needing your own website. We will name platforms here once partnerships are approved. Until then, look at well known freelance marketplaces yourself and compare their fees and terms.

We will only list platforms here once a partnership is actually approved. There is deliberately no link yet.

Some links on this page may be affiliate links. If you use one, we may earn a small commission at no additional cost to you. Not every link is an affiliate link, and we never take gambling or betting partnerships. Read the full disclosure

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How much can I earn from a side hustle?
We cannot say, and nobody can promise it honestly. It depends on your service, your rate, your hours and your market. Anyone guaranteeing a figure is selling you something.
How much time do I need at minimum?
A few fixed hours a week you can sustain beat one intense weekend you never repeat. Consistency does more than intensity.
Do I need to register with the Chamber of Commerce?
That depends on how structural and independent your work is. Check the current criteria with the KvK and the Dutch tax authority. We do not give tax advice.
What does extra income mean for allowances or benefits?
Extra income can affect allowances, benefits or your tax return. Check with the relevant authority up front so you do not have to repay later.
Can I do this alongside my job?
Often yes, but some contracts contain clauses about secondary work or competition. Read your contract before you start.
