PRIVACY POLICY
We keep things simple. This page explains what information this website handles and what it does not.
Last updated: August 2026
The Recovery Diary is an independent, non commercial project and does not currently operate through a registered business. If that changes, or if commercial services are added, the required business and legal details will be published here.
WHO WE ARE
This website is The Recovery Diary, an independent, non commercial self-help project. It is not currently run through a registered business and it does not sell anything.
You can reach us about privacy through the contact form on our Contact page or by email at info@therecoverydiary.com. That is the contact route for every request described on this page.
WHAT THIS WEBSITE IS
The Recovery Diary provides informational content, practical guides and free interactive tools for people dealing with gambling, debt and financial stress. Most of the site works without you giving us any information at all.
THE CONTACT FORM
The contact form asks for a name, an email address, a subject and a message. Please do not include sensitive details such as health information, bank account numbers or identity documents.
When you send the form, those four fields are passed to our email delivery provider, which sends them as an email to our own mailbox at info@therecoverydiary.com. We also send you a short confirmation email at the address you entered. Your email address is set as the reply address so we can answer you.
There is no website database. Your message lives in our mailbox and in the delivery provider's short term sending logs. We keep messages only as long as we need them to handle your question, and delete them afterwards.
THE TOOLS STAY IN YOUR BROWSER
The Debt Reset, Budget Reset, Money Reset, Gambling Reset, Spending Check and 30-Day Reset run entirely in your browser. Anything you type into them, including amounts, notes and progress, is saved in your own device storage. It is never sent to us and we cannot see it.
You can remove it at any time by clearing your browser storage or site data for this website. Clearing it deletes your saved tool data permanently.
NEWSLETTER SIGNUP
If you enter an email address for the weekly step, that address would be used only to send you that email and nothing else. No email provider is connected at this time, so signups are not currently stored or sent anywhere. When a provider is added, this page will name it and every email will include an unsubscribe link.
COOKIES AND LOCAL STORAGE
This website does not use advertising cookies, tracking pixels or third party analytics.
We store one small preference in your browser to remember whether you chose English or Dutch, plus the data you enter into the tools. These stay on your device, are not used to identify you and are not shared.
THIRD PARTY SERVICES
This website is hosted by a hosting provider that, like all web hosts, processes technical request data such as IP address and browser type in order to serve pages and keep the service secure. We do not use this data for profiling.
We use Resend as our email delivery provider to send contact form messages and confirmation emails, and an email hosting provider for the mailboxes that receive them. Both act as processors and handle the contents of those emails on our behalf, under the terms of their own data processing agreements. If any additional service such as analytics or payment is added in future, this policy will be updated before it goes live.
WHY WE ARE ALLOWED TO USE THIS INFORMATION
Under the General Data Protection Regulation every use of personal data needs a legal basis. When you send the contact form, we handle your name, email address and message on the basis of your consent, given by choosing to send it, and our legitimate interest in answering the people who write to us.
If you sign up for the weekly email once a provider is connected, that will run on your consent, which you can withdraw at any time by unsubscribing. The technical request data our hosting provider processes to serve and secure the website rests on our legitimate interest in keeping the site available and safe. We do not use any personal data for advertising or profiling.
WHERE YOUR DATA IS PROCESSED
Our providers may process data outside the European Economic Area, including in the United States. Where that happens, the transfer relies on the safeguards those providers put in place, such as the European Commission's Standard Contractual Clauses or an approved adequacy framework.
In practice the only content that can leave the EEA is what you choose to put in an email to us. The tool data stays in your own browser and is never transferred anywhere.
LINKS TO OTHER WEBSITES
We link to independent organisations, public bodies and support services. Those websites have their own privacy policies and we are not responsible for how they handle your information. Read their policies before sharing anything with them.
YOUR RIGHTS
Under the General Data Protection Regulation you have the right to ask what personal data is held about you, to have it corrected or deleted, to object to or restrict its use, and to receive a copy. The only personal data we hold is what you chose to send us by email, so in most cases that is a single message in a mailbox.
You can send any request through the contact form on our Contact page or by email to info@therecoverydiary.com. You also have the right to complain to the data protection authority in your country, which in the Netherlands is the Autoriteit Persoonsgegevens.
SECURITY
The website is served over an encrypted connection. We keep the amount of information we handle to a minimum, which is the strongest protection there is. No website can promise perfect security, so please do not send us anything you would not want read by someone else.
CHILDREN
This website is intended for adults. It is not directed at children under 16 and we do not knowingly collect information from them.
CHANGES TO THIS POLICY
If this website starts handling information differently, this page will be updated and the date at the top will change. Please check back occasionally.
CONTACT
Questions about privacy can be sent through the contact form on our Contact page or by email to info@therecoverydiary.com. If The Recovery Diary later operates through a registered business or starts commercial sales, the full legal and contact details required by law will be added to this page.
